"Creating partnerships
for global peace, security and development"
“It Sounds Better In Amharic”
On September 23rd and 24th,
2008, the Nephesh Theatre staged two showings of
the play "It Sounds Better In Amharic," at Kipling Collegiate
Institute, a Toronto area high school. The play recounted the actor's
700 km trek from his village in Ethiopia to a refugee camp in Sudan,
and finally to Israel, the Promised Land for all Ethiopian Jews.
The themes of identity and belonging which were touched upon resonated
with the experiences of the young audience, which was composed mainly
of students from Muslim-Somali and other immigrant backgrounds.
This event was a wonderful precursor to the CIPP's launching
of the Jewish-Somali Mentorship project, an initiative which unites
the two communities in partnership to support young Somali professionals.
